There was a time when laborers were not treated so well so help remedy the relations between the Government and laborers/labor unions, they created this holiday.  On this day it commemorates the contributions all workers to strengthen and add to the well-being and prosperity of the US.  Now it is more recognized as the marks of the end of summer.
